The Miami Township Division of Fire & EMS’s first priority is to save lives. When firefighters are alerted that someone is inside a building which is on fire, an immediate rescue is affected to get the person out as safely as possible. Our second priority is to save property. Miami Township’s firefighters are trained to do the least amount of damage possible while fighting a fire. When windows are broken and holes are cut, the heat, smoke and toxic gases are being released to allow visibility and access to the fire as quickly as possible.

The Fire Suppression Division is responsible for the day-to-day operations of all fire suppression companies covering a 26 square mile area. The normal population of Miami Township is around 28,000 people. However this figure swells from 60,000 to 80,000 during the work week. These fire suppression and medical companies operate to provide the services necessary to the citizens, business owners and uses of Miami Township on a daily basis.

The fire division must remain capable at a moments notice to respond to any type of emergency that may occur. The Miami Township fire district is comprised of many forms of residential properties, business, retail and light industrial. There are many special properties located within Miami Township; these include the Dayton General Airport, The Dayton Mall and Lexus-Nexus. You will also find winding through Miami Township, two interstate highways, The Great Miami River and multiple railroad lines.

Staffed at four locations, the fire suppression and medical companies ensure the equipment under their control is in a constant state of readiness. When those companies are not answering calls for service, they are responsible for conducting daily training drills, performing fire prevention and public education activities. They also conduct fire hydrant inspections and test all of the division’s fire hose on a yearly basis.

Apparatus assigned to the fire suppression division includes three engine companies, one truck/engine company, one foam trailer and several staff command vehicles. Other equipment not necessarily assigned to suppression duties includes the Division’s three rescue boats, two special operation vehicles, a rescue support trailer and a hazardous materials trailer. The fire division took possession of a new engine and a 105’ aerial ladder, both from the Pierce Manufacturing Company, in 2004 and 2006 respectively.
