Information Regarding the Ohio Fire Code & the Adoption Process

In the spring of 2003 the State of Ohio started the process of updating the 2002 Ohio Fire Code.  The process was completed in the fall of 2005 with the completion of the 2005 Ohio Fire Code.

Lt. Dale Fahrney represented the Division and actively participated in the review process by attending many State level hearings and participating in the adoption process.

A local organization, the Southwest Ohio Fire Safety Council (SWOFSC), a group of local fire marshals from across Southern Ohio.  This group is very active in the code adoption process through International, State, and local levels to raise the protection levels to not only the residents of Miami Township but residents of the State of Ohio.

This organization formed a code adoption committee (Ad-Hoc) to review the proposed Ohio Fire Code and review the appendices of this document that the State of Ohio included in the Ohio Fire Code but left to local levels to adopt.  The organization felt that the appendices were a very important part of the Ohio Fire Code and contained levels of protection that could not be left unaddressed.

The Southwest Ohio Fire Safety Council (SWOFSC) formed a code adoption committee in which Lt. Dale Fahrney participated and represented the interests of Miami Township.   This committee worked diligently to evaluate every line of code in the appendices and eventually created the Southwest Ohio Fire Safety Council Standards.  These standards closely match the appendices of the Ohio Fire Code with local changes.

Through this organization the 2005 Ohio Fire Code was adopted in many local communities including Miami Township.

While the process to adopt this code was a long one, it was also a good one because of the additional level of protections that it provided to Miami Township residents.

This process also married together for the first time in many jurisdictions the Ohio Fire Code with the Ohio Building Code, which made the job of enforcing the fire code more efficient than ever.
