Emergency
Medical Services
Emergency Medical Service (EMS) accounts for approximately 60% of all the services provided by the Miami Township
Division of Fire and EMS. The EMS Division provides Advanced Life Support services 24-hours a day seven days a
week out of three of the four fire stations. Advanced Life Support includes cardiac monitoring, IV therapy,
intubations, and other medical treatments provided to treat patients who are sick or injured, before transport and
arrival at a hospital. All of the Division's engines and staff cars are equipped with basic life support equipment,
including Automatic External Defibrillators. This is done so that we can facilitate medical care without
delay when all of the ambulances are busy with other emergencies and unable to respond ina timely fashion.
All full-time line personnel, which consists of Lieutenants and firefighters, are required to be trained as paramedics
while the part-time staff hold a minimum certification of basic emergency medical technician, but many have already
obtained the level of paramedic. In 2004, the department responded to 2,467 EMS incidents. These incidents
ranged from broken bones, to bloody noses, to multiple victim accidents, to heart attacks. For all of the firefighters
to be able to consistently handle such a wide array of emergency situations they are required to train and practice
their skills on a monthly basis. The paramedics are also required to obtain a minimum of 92 hours of continuing
education over a three year period while the basic emergency medical technician must receive 40 hours.
The EMS Division not only provides emergency care to the citizens of Miami Township, but also holds community
based educational opportunities. The Division offers blood pressure checks, CPR classes throughout the year
as well as car seat inspections and installations. The Division also hands out “Vials of Life”. The Vial of Life is a
program that is designed to help the EMS providers obtain the personal information of a patient. This is
accomplished when the citizens write down all their personal history like medications, allergies and past medical
history. This information is placed in the vial and then put into the refrigerator. Then in the event of an
emergency the firefighters are able to get information quickly and patient care can start immediately.
The Miami Township Division of Fire and EMS is also a state certified continuing education site in which
classes taught by Miami Township EMS instructors will allow paramedics and basic EMT’s to obtain continuing
education credits in-house. The Division also allows up and coming EMS providers an opportunity to ride along
with our staff to get needed clinical hours.
The Miami Township Division of Fire and EMS is committed to providing the best emergency medical services
possible to the citizens that it serves. The Division is constantly evaluating its performance in the field in an
attempt to bring the highest quality and state of the art treatment to the residents of Miami Township and
those who visit our community.
