Lt. Karen Basso - promoted January 2006, has served with the Miami Township Fire Department since 1998 and has a total time in service of 20 years. Lt. Basso was born in Troy, Ohio and currently resides in Miamisburg.
Lt. Basso began her fire service career as a volunteer with a small community fire department and worked as a Paramedic with private, municipal and hospital based services. Ms. Basso attended nursing school while working as a Paramedic and volunteering as a firefighter. She continued to volunteer her services while working as an RN in both the Intensive Care and Emergency Department. Prior to becoming a career firefighter for Miami Township, Lt. Basso was the Charge Nurse for a busy inner city Emergency Department and also held the position of Captain with her volunteer fire department.
Lt. Basso is active as a Fire, EMS, and Hazardous Materials instructor. Some of her activities include instructor for Ohio Fire Academy’s “Can You Take The Heat” Program. Can You Take The Heat is an initiative to introduce young women to the fire service as a career or encourage them to volunteer. Other activities include instruction and consultation for Hospital Hazardous Materials Response and sitting on the Fire Science Advisory Board for a local community college. Lt. Basso also is involved with the Greater Miami Valley EMS Council Education Committee, which provides training materials related to Emergency Medical Services Protocols.
